“Archaeology, Food, and Resistance at Belle Grove Plantation” at the PATH Foundation (321 Walker Dr., Warrenton) is the second of six public programs about African American Resistance and Freedom-Seeking presented by the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove Descendant Community Project.Today, Dr. Matt Greer discusses his research at Belle Grove Plantation over the past decade, including the excavation of the main slave quarters and the wealth of information learned about the women, children, and men enslaved at Belle Grove.
Dr. Greer is currently researching ceramics made by enslaved and Indigenous potters at Virginia plantations and free Black communities in southern Illinois. A Q&A session follows his presentation.
This event is hosted by Afro-American Historical Association of Fauquier County. Co-sponsors are the Josephine School Community Museum, Belle Grove Plantation, the Shenandoah Black Heritage Project, and the Institute for Historical Biology at the College of William & Mary.
