French drummer, composer and producer Seb Brun has spent over two decades developing a singular artistic language at the crossroads of experimental percussion, electroacoustic music and radical electronics. Founder of the influential Carton Records, one of Europe's landmark experimental labels with nearly eighty releases, and leader of the avant-rock and rough techno project Parquet, Brun has consistently explored the physical and perceptual boundaries of sound.
This autumn, he releases Materials, the second album of his solo project Ar Ker, following the acclaimed self-titled debut released in 2020.
Conceived as a single composition unfolding across three movements, Materials investigates three elemental substances that define both its sonic architecture and its conceptual framework: the organic resonance of maple wood through the drum kit, the bronze of cymbals pushed to their physical limits until they dissolve into electronic feedback, and finally the copper of electricity, where saturation transforms acoustic matter into pure energy.
The solo project Ar Ker takes its name from the Breton prefix ker, originally referring to a fortified place before evolving to signify a village or dwelling. Like its etymology, the project inhabits a territory between the archaic and the contemporary—a ritualistic journey where shamanic intensity meets raw electronic sound.
Working as both musician and craftsman, Seb Brun treats drums, metal objects, electronics and amplification as a single interconnected instrument. His practice is rooted in the materiality of sound and the physical engagement of performance, exploring repetition, accumulation, distortion, temporal expansion and the coexistence of multiple scales of listening. The drum kit ceases to function as a timekeeping instrument, becoming instead a generator of tension, instability and energy.
Improvisation remains central to his work. Rather than seeking complete control, Brun embraces instability, allowing feedback, saturation and unforeseen sonic events to reshape the performance in real time. Through this constantly evolving dialogue between body, instrument and technology, he questions the role of rhythm, the agency of the performer and the possibility of active listening within an increasingly saturated sonic environment.
With his new album Materials, Seb Brun further establishes himself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary experimental music, creating work where hybridization is never an aesthetic choice alone but a critical and deeply physical artistic practice.
