About this Event
What does a sixteenth-century Venetian courtroom have to teach modern legal professionals about ethics? More than you might expect. This program brings together legal ethics and English literature, opening with a staged reading of Act 4, Scene 1 of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice—a scene that raises enduring questions about justice, the limits of legal argument, and the duties advocates owe their clients and the court. Using Shakespeare's dramatic courtroom as a lens, we will examine how our rules of professional conduct speak to the ethical challenges lawyers navigate every day, from the boundaries of zealous advocacy to the duties of honesty and fairness that govern conduct before a tribunal.
