Topic: The threat of wildfire looms large for communities in the West, with fires growing in size and intensity as factors from drought to rising temperatures to a history of fire suppression amplify the conditions that can lead to catastrophic blazes. With many communities unprepared, recent events have resulted in tragic outcomes. Wildfire evacuation planning offers a means to better understand local wildfire hazards and build toward fire adapted communities through the identification of key evacuation routes and how those routes perform under the time-dynamics of specific wildfire events. Randy Johnson of DKS Associates will present on recent study efforts using simulation-based dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) models to assess evacuation routes to identify capacity constraints, network resiliency, and ultimately develop recommendations for operational and infrastructure strategies to better facilitate evacuation to reduce Evacuation Time Estimates (ETEs). We will also discuss how you can work with emergency service professionals to build realistic scenario parameters and the model methodologies to capture those elements. Following this presentation, we will open the floor for a roundtable discussion. Discussion topics may include state and local requirements and guidance, private development evacuation assessment needs, analysis methods, and innovative evacuation strategies. Come learn how evacuation planning can support your journey through wildfire preparedness.
