YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO USE A SEWNIG MACHINE PRIOR TO ATTENDING THIS WORKSHOP

About this Event

Come join the EXLAB staff and community for a mask making workshop! Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced sewist, mask making is a fun and simple way to get to know a sewing machine and a few staples of fabric crafting such as pleating and using bias tape. Together, we’ll be sewing a surgical style reusable fabric mask with adjustable ties that fasten behind your head.

This workshop has few things that need to be taken care of before participation.

Required materials are:

  • Sewing machine
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Premade double fold bias tape OR 0.75 inch Bias tape maker (available for free at EXLAB Atlanta)
  • Fabric and Interfacing
  • Matching thread

Note that we will not be spending time cutting fabric in the time specified. We have precut fabric designed for this workshop available for free at EXLAB Atlanta if you’d like to pick it up any time before the workshop.

If you’d like to use your own fabric, the specifications are listed below. We recommend a non-stretch cotton or cotton blend for the outside fabric and lining, and medium to heavy interfacing.

You will need to cut three fabric rectangles of equal size- one from the outside fabric, one fabric from the lining fabric, and one with one from the interfacing. The dimensions for these masks are:

  • Small Mask- 7x9 inches
  • Large Mask- 8x10 inches
  • For the ties, you’ll need to cut two long strips of fabric, at 2x38 inches each. If using premade bias tape, you can skip this step.
  • For the nose piece, you’ll need to cut one small rectangle at 2x5 inches.
