Lock historian Christine Williams will lead a FREE walking tour of the 4 Appleton locks. Learn about the history of the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, how and why the locks were built in the 1850s, how the hand-operated locks work, who the lockmasters were and how their families lived their lives on the locks. Learn about the boats that traversed the system, the Corps of Engineers and the decline and closure of the system in 1982. Hear about the work of the dedicated local leaders and politicians who saved the lock system and the restoration efforts to bring the system back to operation today. MEET AT APPLETON LOCK 4 - BELOW THE COLLEGE AVENUE BRIDGE. ALLOW AMPLE TIME FOR PARKING - PARKING LOT NEAR BANTA BOWL OR TELULAH PARK MAY BE NECESSARY. This is a Appleton Historical Society/Fox Locks joint event.
