Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring for 13 instruments is the centerpiece of this program with its radiant optimism and pastoral grace. John Williams’ Air and Simple Gifts offers a poignant blend of tradition and cinematic lyricism. George Gershwin’s tender Lullaby reveals the composer’s early gift for melody and charm. Ascending Bird, arranged by Colin Jacobsen, takes us on a transcendent journey through Persian folklore, while Valerie Coleman’s Portraits of Langston paints vivid musical scenes inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes.
