Appalachian Coal Town Christmas

Appalachian Coal Town Christmas” celebration gets underway at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, turning this historic coal camp into a Christmas setting filled with thousands of lights! The 2026 event runs November 27–28 and December 4–5 from 5–9 PM each night. You can take a guided underground ride through the old mine, where veteran miners share stories about West Virginia’s coal mining past. The tour travels through about 1,500 feet of underground passages, and the mine stays around 58 degrees year-round. Back above ground, you can hear Christmas caroling inside the historic coal camp church, visit Santa, and go ice skating on the outdoor rink surrounded by holiday lights. The Youth Museum will also be open with hands-on exhibits, while craft vendors and two gift shops offer coal creations, jewelry, Christmas items, sweatshirts, and freshly made fudge. The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine first opened to visitors in 1962. There is a separate fee for the underground mine tour and ice skating.
