In this participatory workshop, we’ll explore the rich tradition of Appalachian ballad singing, focusing on songs passed down through generations in Virginia and North Carolina. You’ll hear how these haunting melodies and vivid stories have traveled across oceans and through time, shaped by the voices and lives of the people who carried them forward. Together, we’ll learn 1–2 traditional ballads in the “knee-to-knee” oral tradition style, emphasizing lyricism, ornamentation, and personal expression.
Along the way, we’ll discuss the cultural significance of balladry in Appalachia—including its role as a storytelling tradition and its history as a feminist practice. Expect tales that touch on love, hardship, and a bit of darkness (some themes may include death, though nothing overly graphic), all grounded in the human experiences that define this music. Bring your voice and curiosity as we connect with an old tradition that still has something meaningful to say today. All levels are welcome! Ages 10+. Don’t worry about preparing in advance! All materials will be provided during the workshop.
After the workshop, stick around for an evening concert featuring Elsa Howell and Murphy Campbell! We hope you’ll make a day of it and join us for both.
