Beyorslf Gallery cordially invites you to attend the opening of a two-person exhibition of new works (painting, mixed media and video) by Yori Hatakeyama and Spookey Ruben, titled “Antigone, Doom Fruit Warrior”. The exhibition will open on December 2nd at 6pm and concludes December 5th 2021.

Yori Hatakeyama was born in Chiba, Japan. She holds a B.A. in Oil Painting from the Musashino Art University, Tokyo, went on to study at The Art Students League of New York w/ focus on Egg tempera. Her work has been exhibited in New York, London, Tokyo and Los Angeles. Her work is mostly rooted in combining and contrasting ancient classical painting techniques with new contemporary ideas. In her most recent egg tempera series (six paintings) she brings attention to the shocking surreality of ‘pre-determined fate’ in Sophocles’ Greek Tragedy “Oedipus Rex” by re-imagining a selection of characters (Oedipus, Jocasta, Laius, Creon, Tiresias and the Sphinx) as monsters from an 80’s splatter film. An unusual, yet very fitting way of drawing attention to the graphic violence deeply embedded in classical literature.

Spookey Ruben was born in Ottawa, Canada. He studied film at York University and has gained much acclaim as a musician, music video director and composer. He says that his visuals and his music are inseparable. His visual work ranges from wood sculpture to digital graphic art – has been exhibited in Germany, Canada and the U.S. His work centers around his curiosity of juxtaposing textures, shapes and colors that are rarely seen together. He refers to the line where two contrasting materials meet as “the point at which all sparks fly” – In this show Spookey gives us a brand new vision of string art bordering on plastic shapes and fake grass.

This two-person show culminates in a 7-minute collaborative video, world premiere of “Antigone, Doom Fruit Warrior” co-written and starring both Yori Hatakeyama (as Antigone) and Spookey (as old man). The video loosely describes the journey of Antigone overpowering the demonic seeds of fate, and conquering centuries of male dominance.
