About this Event

Join us with Antara Haldar and Rupal Patel, in conversation with Henry Mance, to explore the past, present and possible futures of economics.
Everyman is a bold retelling of the story of capitalism that treats the core concepts of economics as living, breathing beings, blending fiction and fact to upend 250 years of economic orthodoxyFor 250 years, a ghostly hand – bloodied and invisible – has scripted our lives. We call it economics. Telling its story like never before, Everyman makes this phantom force truly visible for the first time.
Money: The Inside Story - The Bank of England know more about the money system than most – after all, it is their job to keep it running smoothly. Now, for the first time, two of its economists take you deep into their vaults to tell you the inside story of money.
Every morning, someone unassumingly types numbers into a spreadsheet, hits enter and creates millions of pounds. Somewhere deep underground, a machine most of us will never see props up the entire British economy. And hidden in a vault nearby are individual banknotes worth £100 million each. These are just some of the surprising truths about how money works.
Antara Haldar is a professor at the University of Cambridge and Visiting Faculty at Harvard University. She writes a globally syndicated monthly column for Project Syndicate, and has been published in The Atlantic, Times Literary Supplement, WIRED, The Independent and elsewhere. Her award-winning research has received millions of dollars in funding, been covered by major media platforms like Financial Times and NPR and cited by the World Development Report and White House.
Rupal Patel is a senior economist at the Bank of England and work as an adviser to the committee who set interest rates. Rupal spends most of her time thinking about inflation and now and then writes books about economics.
Henry Mance is the UK news editor at the Financial Times. He has won two British Press Awards, and wrote the book How to Love Animals.
