Annual Tibetan Monlam Festival 2022: Day 5-Gomar Cham Dancing
About this Event
The Monlam Festival of prayer and spiritual learnings was first held in 1409 by Tsong Khapa, the founder of the Gelukpa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. This is the largest sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Join our guide Lee to experience the sights, sounds, and culture of this rich historic Tibetan festival in 12 virtual tours spread over days. Join us for one or all 12.

Part 8 Guomari Village Cham Dance is also called "military dance" in is more complex than the "Cham Dance" in Wutun Temple. The steps and techniques are highly technical, performative, and lack confrontation, similar to "military exercise". This is a very characteristic men's dance dedicated to Erlang God. It is performed by mutual visits and confrontation between two Tu villages. Each village has a group of 10 people, divided into two teams. The dancers hold two wooden sticks more than a foot long, dancing face to face.
