Rehearsals between November 1st, 2024-January 18th, 2025 This is a non-equity, volunteer position.
Audition instructions:
Please arrive on time. There will be cold readings from the script. Please bring a resume and headshot if you have them and come prepared to provide a list of schedule conflicts.
Synopsis- This dramatization captures the charm and excitement of L.M. Montgomery’s enduring classic about an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, from her first encounter with her austere guardian to her thrilling graduation from Queen’s Academy. The play faithfully recreates the memorable events and characters from the brilliant novel. All the tragedies and triumphs that mark Anne’s growth from adolescence to early childhood are here: her friendship with Diana, feuds with Gilbert, her adoration of Matthew, the mistaken wine bottle, the cake disaster, her broken leg, the Scholastic achievements and the saving of Green Gables.

Young Anne Shirley -female-Age range: 9-11 The protagonist of the play. Anne is an orphan who is adopted by Matthew & Marilla. She is stubborn, passionate, loyal and intelligent. She loves beauty & fantasy. Heavy line load – all of Act 1. Must be a natural red head.
Older Anne Shirley -Female-Age range: 13-16 The protagonist of the play in Act 2. Same as act 1 but we see her start to mature in emotionally and physically. Love interest to Gilbert. A small kids is received on her hand. Heavy line load. Must be a natural red head.
Matthew Cuthbert- Male-Age range: 50s A bachelor who lives at Green Gables with his sister, Marilla. He is painfully shy & eccentric. Although he is terrified of women he instantly likes Anne. He is her kindred spirit and must have good paternal chemistry with Anne.
Marilla Cuthbert- Female-Age Range: 60s-70s An unmarried woman who raises Anne. She is all angles and straight lines with a stern face and knotted hair. The physical severity mirrors her moral & emotional severity. Although she does not usually express emotion, underneath she has a very wry sense of humor and a loving heart. Although she is strict she loves Anne and grows softer as the play goes on.
Young Diana Barry-Female- Age Range: 9-11 Diana is Anne’s best friend. Lovely girl. She comes from a very wealthy family. Prim & proper. Quite shy and triese to keep Anne out of trouble. Becomes drunk at Anne’s tea party. Act 1.
Older Diana Barry- Female- Age Range: 13-16. Same as Act 1. Becomes even more regal and dignified. Act 2.
Younger Gilbert Blythe- Male- Age Range 10-12. A handsome and smart Avonlea boy who becomes Anne’s rival when he makes the mistake of teasing her about her red hair. Act 1.
Older Gilbert Blythe- Male- Age Range- 14-18. Same personality as Act 1. He is very competitive with Anne and has fallen in love with her. Sacrifices his job for Anne. Act 2.
Rachel Lynde- Female-Age Range: 30s-60s The town busybody. She likes nothing better to give her opinion and preach her morales. An affectionate quarrelsome friendship exists between her and Marilla. She is outspoken about everything from politics to fashion & although childless, she never fails to advise Marilla on how to raise Anne.
Mr. Phillips- Male- Age Range: Late teens- 20s-The School Master at Avonlea. He is an inattentive teacher and capricious disciplinarian. He spends his class time flirting with, Prissy Andrews.
Prissy Andrews- Female- Age range: 14-16- Beautiful and flirtatious. Classmate of Anne. *Also plays Mrs. Allan
Mrs. Barry- Female- Age range: 30s-40s Diana’s Mother. She is severe, wealthy & unforgiving woman. She expects her children to follow strict and sometimes unreasonable rules. She is quick to condemn Anne when Anne makes mistakes.
Minnie May Barry- Female- Age range: 8-10 Diana’s sassy little sister. Must be able to play dramatic well. She falls in with croup and almost dies but is saved by Anne.
Young Josie Pye-Female- Age range 8-11 Pretty but bratty. Know it all. She is snobby and is quite mean to Anne. Act 1.
Older Josie Pye- Female- Age Range 12-15 Same as Act 1. Dares Anne to do something dangerous which results in Anne breaking her leg. Act 2.
Younger Ruby Gillis-Female-age range 9-11. Very pretty. The youngest of the many Gillis girls. Has learned a lot about growing up from her older sisters and loves to share her superior knowledge. She inclines toward the sentimental and hysterical fits. She cares more about her good looks and string of boyfriends than her studies. Act 1.
Older Ruby Gillis-Female- age range 13-17. Same as Act 1. Has grown in beauty. Boy crazy. Act 2.
Young Moody MacPherson-Male-age range 8-11. Pious student in Anne’s class. He wants to be a Pastor when he grows up. Act1
Older Moody MacPherson- Male- Age range 13-17. Same personality as Act 1. In Act 2.
Younger Charlie Sloan- Male- age range 8-11. One of the first people to recognize Anne’s charms. Charlie admires Anne from afar. Wants to go into politics.
Older Charlie Sloan- Male- age range- 13-17. Same personality as Act 1. In Act 2.
Younger Jane Andrews- Female- age range 8-11. A plain, sensible girl in Anne’s group of friends. She is not ambitious or imaginative but she she steadfast and reliable. Act 1.
Older Jane Andrews- Female- age range 12-16. Same personality as Act 1. Rule follower. Act 2.
Miss Susan Stacy-Female-Age range 18-30. Anne’s new teacher. Her unorthodox and liberal teaching methods worry the conservative town. All of her students love her and she becomes a role model for Anne.
Aunt Josephine Barry-Female-Age range 40s-80s Diana’s Aunt. She is VERY wealthy and lives in a mansion. She expects others to cater to her but grows bored when they do. Anne’s unexpected vivacity charms her. *also plays Miss Rogerson
Mrs. Allan- Female-18-25. Wife of the new minister, Mr.Allan. She is gorgeous. Anne admires Mrs. Allan for her youth, beauty and natural goodness. She turns to her often for advice. *Also plays Prissy Andrews
Reverend Allan-Male-Age range-20s-late 30s. The new minister of Avonlea. Natural leader and charismatic. *also plays the role of Jerry Buote
Mrs. Blewett-female- age Range- 18-30s. She is a cruel and stingy woman who wants to adopt Anne to care for her brood of children. *Also plays Miss Susan Stacey
Reverend Bentley-male-age range-30s-60s. Boring minister who is checked out. He retires. *also plays President of Queen’s Academy
Miss Rogerson-female-age range- 40s-80s
Strict Sunday school teacher- Actress will also play *Aunt Josephine Barry
Jerry Buote- Male- 20s-late 30s Hired hand.* Also plays the role of Reverend Allan
Tillie Boulter- Female- age range- 5-8
Student at Anne’s school.
Jimmy Glover-male- age range- 7-10

Bessie Wright- Female- age range- 8-12. Student at Anne’s School. Likes Gilbert.
