Anne Lounsbery, professor of Slavic studies at NYU and author of the scholarly bestseller Life is Elsewhere, will explore the phenomenon of meshchanstvo. How do you translate it into English? You don’t. It’s a distinctly Russian cultural concept. Professor Lounsbery will trace the history of meshchanstvo in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and examine how it evolved over time.
