Annapolis Jazz & Roots has enjoyed a fabulous partnership with Anne Arundel Public Library & Foundation. Since the festival began four years ago, our traditional Saturday morning events (concerts, lectures and discussions) have been tremendously popular.
Featuring Ed Hrybyk on upright bass, pianist Savino Palumbo and drummer Aldo Branch, the program "Bass Traditions" will be a delight for both jazz afficionados and newcomers to the genre. Hrybyk is a seasoned performer, recording artist, bandleader and teacher who loves
his craft and the history associated with the music he plays. He'll introduce the audience to bass icons Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, Oscar Pettiford and other stellar figures in the world of jazz.
He'll present such tunes as "Nostalgia in Times Square." The bluesy tune was selected to to highlight Mingus, a phenomenal bass player and one of the greatest jazz composers the world has known. “Gravy Waltz” is composed by Ray Brown, one of Ed's all time favorite bass players.
It’s a gospel/blues inspired song that is a lot of fun to play. He'll also introduce a Ron Carter arrangement of "Laverne Walk" by Oscar Pettiford. Ed heard the arrangement when he first saw Ron Carter at Keystone Korner in 2019. With a cool interlude section, it swings extremely hard and is a great way to pay homage to two legendary bassists with one song. The trio will also share "Grief" by Ed Hrybyk. The composition is inspired by the role of music in the grieving
process. It’s a powerful jazz waltz with passionate rubato sections.
Ed Hrybyk is a true jazz hero, widely respected in the DMV for the leadership role he played benefitting both musicians and music lovers. In the days of the Pandemic and continuing to this day, he has presented to outdoor public music series: Charm City Porch Concerts and the Baltimore Pop-Up Jazz Jam. These free events occur weekly in different
neighborhoods from about March to December. His efforts to bring live music to the people of Baltimore City have been recognized by the Kennedy Center, Maryland State Arts Council, Baltimore Office of the Promotion of the Arts, Baltimore Jazz Alliance and a host of news media. He brought hope to many musicians and some followed his lead to bring music outdoors in their own communities, giving music lovers a great reason to get outdoors and safely see their neighbors. A Porch Concert series was begun in Annapolis in 2025. Better late than never!
At the free concert on November 15, attendees will be treated to a profound listening experience enhanced by a bit of jazz history at no extra cost! As always, questions from the audience will be welcome after the concert.
Please Note: In its fourth year, the Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival works with amazing Venue Partners and volunteers to offer free and modestly priced events for adults and families. All of the artists you enjoy have outstanding international, national or regional reputations. Please consider making a small donation to help us keep funding these public performances. We sincerely thank you for any amount you choose to donate. Enjoy the festival!
