About the Book
Cady's mother disappeared when Cady was only six. Now about to turn fourteen, Cady aches for her mother to be with her. In an attempt to curb her granddaughter's angry outbursts, Grandma Winnie takes Cady on a road trip throughout Wisconsin and Michigan.
"We'll repeat the trip your mother took when she was your age and maybe you'll learn more about her," Grandma tells Cady. Adding to Cady's stress is the deadline for her essay entry in Barnesville's centennial celebration. Through missing her mother and trying to find her, Cady is learning to see herself. Accompanying her on her adventures are her best friend, Irish; her "crush," John Ray Chicaug; and an ever-present blue jay.
About the Author
Ann Dallman has lifelong roots in Michigan’s UP. Her first Middle Grade novel, Cady and the Bear Necklace, received a State History Award (Books/Youth) from the Historical Society of Michigan as well as a Midwest Book Award, New Mexico-Arizona Book Award, was a Next Generation Indie Book Award Finalist and a UP Notable Book. Her second book, Cady and the Birchbark Box, also received the Historical Society of Michigan State Award. It, too, is a UP Notable Book. The third book in the series, “Cady and the Search for Family,” was released this past spring.
Dallman’s career has been a varied one over the course of more than 40 years. She started out as a feature writer in the newsroom of the former Marinette-Eagle Star, then a daily newspaper covering the border cities of Marinette, WI and Menominee, MI. She later worked in the marketing office of the University of Wisconsin-Marinette campus where she also taught Introductory Journalism. This was followed by a stint in the corporate arena at the former Aerial Co., at that time the largest distributorship of salon products in the Midwest. A feature writer for Salon Today and American Salon magazines, she also wrote and produced a monthly newsletter for 1,200 JCPenney Styling Salons. She taught English/Language Arts on the Hannahville Indian Reservation in Wilson, MI for 15 years, later working as a Title I instructor in the Marinette public school system.
“I was once told I have printers’ ink in my blood which I consider one of the best compliments I’ve ever received. Being versatile has kept me employed. I’ve been writing middle grade/young adult novels for the past six years as well as working as a freelance journalist for several publications. Staying flexible while pursuing what one loves is the key in today’s marketplace.”
