Explore the dynamic intersection of animation and social justice in this FREE workshop! Delve into the creative realm of animation while examining its power as a tool for social commentary and change. Students will learn to infuse their animations with meaningful messages and narratives that address pressing social issues. From representation and diversity to activism and advocacy, this course offers a comprehensive exploration of how animation can be harnessed to promote social justice and inspire positive societal transformation.
Workshop Details:
- Duration: Wednesdays, May 8-June 26 (8 weeks/sessions)
- Time: 4:30pm-6:30pm (2 hours)
- Age: Middle and high school students only
- Location: 900 Wayne Ave. Silver Spring, MD, basement level /Level B
- Skill Level: Beginner to advanced
- Parents must provide signed permission form and video waiver for the year 2024
- MCPS students eligible for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours based on attendance and participation.

- Week 1: Introduction to Animation and Social Justice
- Week 2: Understanding Storytelling in Animation
- Week 3: Exploring Techniques: Traditional and Digital Animation
- Week 4: Character Design and Representation
- Week 5-6: Digital Animation Bootcamp
- Week 7: Sound Design and Music in Animation
- Week 8: Final Project Presentation and Reflection

IMBD | Nayna Agrawal (Writer)
Nayna Agrawal is known for Encanto (2021), StarBeam (2020) and Forty Nine Fifty (2018).
Featured in Variety’s “100 Writers to Watch” in 2015, Nayna is a multi-talented individual with a diverse background. She has experience as a former NYC analyst, a former DC policy writer, a former international aid director, and a former touring dancer. Nayna’s plays have been successfully staged and produced in several major cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Chicago.Her exceptional talent has been recognized through various awards and scholarships, such as the East West Players playwright scholarship, a Moving Arts Theater playwright fellowship, and Hawaii’s Kuma Kahua Theatre playwright award. In 2023, Nayna’s plays will be showcased at prestigious venues, including the Signature Theater in DC on June 5, StudioTenn in Nashville on February 6, and The Great Plains Theatre Conference in Omaha from May 27 to June 4.
