Join us for “A Sisterhood: Toni Morrison, June Jordan, & Angela Davis,” a celebration of three women whose lives, work and activism have shaped art, politics and the world we live in.
The iconic activist and philosopher Angela Davis has been a major influence in global politics for more than 50 years. Davis first gained fame in the 1960s and 70s through her work within second-wave feminism and Marxist advocacy, specifically fighting against the firing of Communist professors at University of California. More recently, she has fought for prison abolition and spoken out in support of anti-imperialist movements, Occupy Wall Street, and Black Lives Matter.
A staff writer at The New Yorker since 1994, cultural critic Hilton Als received the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in Criticism “for bold and original reviews that strove to put stage dramas within a real-world cultural context.” His published work as the author of White Girls and My Pinup: A Paean to Prince, and a contributor to numerous collections, biographies, and art catalogs explores race, sexuality, class, art, and American identity provocatively, exploding the boundaries of the genre in which it is contained.
