Master director Otto Preminger’s superb Freudian noir thriller opens on a high hill at a vast estate where paramedic Frank Jessup (Robert Mitchum) treats Catherine Tremayne (Barbara O'Neil), who suspects she has survived an attempted murder. As Frank becomes infatuated with Catherine’s outwardly angelic stepdaughter Diane (Jean Simmons), he finds that her angelic countenance masks an unbridled psychotic who'll let nothing stand in the way of her happiness. As Diane arranges for Catherine's death, she forces Frank to become her spiritual accomplice in her murder plot. (1953, 91 mins)
