Title: Performing Masculinity: Calgary Men in the Great War
Description:
This talk is about the subject of my master’s thesis, conceptions of masculinity in Calgary soldiers during the Great War. I will explore how men accepted, rejected, and renegotiated hegemonic masculine expectations over the course of the war. At battalion departure parades, in their letters home, and in memoirs written years after the war, men performed masculinity. The textual records they left behind, demonstrate how the war impacted hegemonic codes of masculinity. The definition of manliness that existed in 1914 was not destroyed by the Great War, but it did not emerge unscathed.
