Lichfield Market Square | Lichfield, EN
George visited Lichfield shortly after being released from Derby Gaol in 1651. Standing barefoot in the Market Square he denounced the city with the words "Woe unto the bloody city of Lichfield."
As part of the 400th anniversary of George Fox's birth, we are pleased to present our re-enactment of this important piece of Staffordshire history.
Join us in Lichfield Market Square on Sunday 27th October at 2.30 pm for a free performance.
Full address: Lichfield Market Square Lichfield WS13 6LG. Gather in the Market Square for a 2.30 pm start to the performance.
We would love the audience to get into the spirit of the event by wearing 17th century dress but that is of course optional.
Written and produced by Berry Dicker and directed by David Titley.
The image on the cover shows a painting of a barefoot and bedraggled George Fox in the snowy market called “Woe to the Bloody City of Lichfield”. It was painted by Quaker artist Robert Spence (1871-1964). You can view the painting at St Mary’s Hub where it is displayed as part of the Lichfield District Council collection.
