WE LOSING RECIPES: A Black August Panel + Community Discussion

In Black August, we gather to remember and to reckon. We remember those who chose the sea. We remember those who fought to live another day. We remember those torn from their families and forced to build a country with stolen labor, and we honor the distinct culture created through survival, brilliance, and resistance, culture that has shaped the world.
We Losing Recipes is a conversation about what it means to be the originators, innovators, and curators of culture and still watch our ideas get copied, commercialized, and credited to someone else. From media literacy to digital blackface, digital sharecropping, and hyper-consumption, we’ll examine the systems that turn Black creativity into content and community into commodity.
Featuring voices across social media/marketing, advocacy, community engagement, history & museum studiesand Black creative entrepreneurship, this discussion will connect past and present, and move beyond diagnosis to strategy:
- How do we recognize extraction when it’s packaged as “trends”?
- How do we shape and preserve value—culturally, economically, and spiritually?
- What does protection look like: credit, compensation, ownership, archives, and practice?
- How do we mobilize community toward action and equip future generations to protect their work, voice, and value?
We’ll weave in reflection and literary grounding, including the spirit of Claude McKay and Harlem Renaissance witness, to hold both grief and clarity, so we leave with language, tools, and next steps.
