What do people mean when they say they no longer feel safe on campus? The comic "Vulnerable: In/security, Anti/discrimination and Conflict in Everyday University Life after 7 October 2023" translates the key findings of a research project into a graphic narrative. Amid intensifying public debate about in/security at universities, the project examined how students‘ and staff members‘ sense of security has changed. It set out to analyse subjective experiences of in/security and to map what people mean when they say they no longer feel safe on campus: Which situations gave rise to feelings of insecurity? How did a declining sense of safety relate to experiences of discrimination? And who was particularly affected?
In this conversation, we discuss the research, reflect on knowledge production at the intersection of art and scholarship, and explore comics as a medium for conveying social realities charged with affect, stereotypes, discrimination and solidarity.
