We celebrate Filipino American History Month to recognize the early Filipino settlers and their role in U.S. history and their great contributions and achievements. Our goal is to increase the public's awareness and appreciation by hosting religious, social and cultural events and activities and by sharing notable oral history.
The earliest documented evidence of Filipino presence in the US occurred in October 1587 when Mariners called “Luzon Indios,” under Spanish command landed in Morro Bay, CA. Then, the “Louisiana Manila men” presence recorded as early as 1763. With 8-10 generations in the New World, Filipinos are the oldest continuous Asian American settler community in North America.
The Filipinos are also the fastest growing minority group in the Southeastern United States, and the third in the nation.
The contributions of Filipino Americans have enhanced the freedom, prosperity, and greatness that America continues to enjoy today. During World War II, more than 260,000 Filipino and Filipino-American soldiers answered the call of duty and bravely served and sacrificed under the American flag. The Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act (Public Law 114-265), unanimously passed through Congress and was signed into law by President Obama in December 2016.
"The Fil-Am Community fought many challenges in 2020, but we held steadfast as the pandemic covered our nation and the world with its wrath. Through the grace of God, we not only survived, but also thrived! Much of our survival is due to our resiliency and Bayanihan Spirit. This is why this year's theme is "Together, We Thrive!" We are highlighting the resiliency and contributions of Filipino Americans, to the greatness that America continues to enjoy today. " - Jane Rolen, Chair FAHM
Let us reflect on our shared history and be grateful for the continued contributions that the Filipino Americans make to the USA and beyond.
