Workshop 1: Podcast Journalism: From Idea to Air

3:00-4:00PM

30 min presentation with Q & A 20min

Join Hana Baba and Leila Day, creators of “The Stoop” podcast in this class on podcast journalism and documentary-style storytelling. Hana and Leila are both journalists, and their podcast includes reporting, interviews, research, and sound design. In this workshop, they will go through an episode from idea to air, sharing how to build a story from concept to completion.

Through listening to clips, they will break down concepts such as topic vs. story, writing for the ear, research, and what audio elements can be used to enhance an episode.

Workshop 2: Telling our stories our way: Voice & Audience

4:00-5:00PM

30 min presentation with Q/A

This is a workshop tackling the question- as a podcaster, how should I sound? Many factors inform that decision- from your audience, to your show format, to your style and goals. This session will explore this question through listening to clips from “The Stoop,” and ending with an exercise with the audience.

We’ll also explore writing for your voice, language, accents, dialects, using your authentic voice, and conversational delivery.

About the Stoop

“The Stoop” podcast–– part of the Radiotopia podcast network from PRX– tells stories from across the Black Diaspora, digging into the stories about Blackness that are not always shared out in the open. Hosts Leila Day and Hana Baba start conversations about what it means to be Black and how we talk about Blackness. It’s an exploration of the joyful, the painful, and everything in between. Leila is African American, Hana is Sudanese American, and through their own stories, interviews, and field reporting, they dig into questions that are personal and cultural.

Now in their 8th season, The Stoop is multiple award winning- honored by The National Association of Black Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists- Northern California, and was awarded best podcast by the Black Podcast Awards in 2020. It’s been featured on NPR, PRI, ABC, CNN, CBC, OkayAfrica, Spotify, Financial Times, and in 2020 The Stoop was named by the New York Times and Oprah Magazine as a podcast to listen to.
