The Pink Panther Strikes Again proved to be a surprise hit for United Artists in 1976. Producer, writer, director Blake Edwards conceived the film as an epic, zany chase film in the vein of his earlier comedy The Great Race and at one point considered a longer version with an intermission.

Vincent Canby of The New York Times noted that the chemistry between Herbert Lom as the tortured Chief Inspector Dreyfus and Peter Sellers as the accident prone Clouseau create a “hilarious team that make slapstick farce…a delight!”
