"The Last Gift" Documentary - Seminar and Screening

The University of Miami's Department of Cells and Systems Biology and CHARM (the Center for HIV and Research in Mental Health) will be co-hosting a seminar and private screening of the Emmy Award-Winning Documentary, "The Last Gift: Scientific Discovery at the End of Life" with invited speaker David (Davey) M. Smith, MD, MAS.
This documentary sheds light on The Last Gift Study at UC San Diego; a tissue donation study aimed at understanding the impacts of HIV on the body though rapid-autopsy research.
In following the last moments of our protagonist, Jim, audiences learn about the powerful gift of organ donations and what this means for HIV research.
Dr. Smith is the founding director and PI of the Last Gift program, which is an end-of-life translational research model designed to answer open research questions needed to cure HIV.
Davey Smith, MD, MAS, is an infectious disease specialist and prolific translational researcher who has published over 400 scientific publications. Since 2022, Dr. Smith was recognized by Clarivate as being in the top 1% of researchers in the world by scientific citations. Dr. Smith is the international protocol co-chair for the ACTIV-2 treatment study, which is a part of the US government's response to COVID-19. He is currently the Associate Vice Chancellor of Clinical and Translational Research where he leads a team of scientists to better understand and overcome scientific and medical roadblocks.
