The 28-minute film, recently donated to the library by Mitchell Historic Properties, Inc., is a well-known piece of Galveston history and has been viewed by many, both islanders and visitors alike, at various previous locations such as the Pier 21 Theater.
Showings will take place on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, with enhanced sound and lighting in the library's Wortham Auditorium located on the first floor. The showings are free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
The film, recently remastered from its original 35MM slide presentation to an advanced widescreen high-definition 4K format, will remain viewable free of charge in the library's Harris Gallery, which contains the Great Storm of 1900 exhibit, on the fourth floor beginning Tuesday, Sept. 9.
A large-screen 4K TV, ceiling-mounted speakers and bench seating will be added to the gallery to provide a theatrical viewing experience for visitors.
The library’s entire Great Storm exhibit will be refreshed for the storm’s anniversary, with new photographs from the Galveston and Texas History Center and several artifacts added. Additionally, the exhibit will be fully bilingual, with labels in both English and Spanish throughout.
