Tickets are £10 and can be purchased viaEventbrite or at reception.
Jazz pianist and singer Hugo Jennings is a rising star on the London jazz scene who will be bringing a quartet of some of Europe's finest jazz musicians to Sands End for a special evening of Christmas jazz.
Two winters ago, Hugo formed a group to celebrate the music of one of the great jazz vocalists, Joe Williams. Featuring some of the most highly-respected musicians in London Europe, the band is designed to showcase the multitude of styles and colours which Joe performed and recorded throughout his career, ranging from his sensitive and operatic small-group albums with the likes of Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, George Shearing, as well as his rousing bluesy hits with Count Basie, the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, and many others.
In this evening’s show, the material comes from Joe Williams’s album “That Holiday Feelin“,released in 1990 by Verve. Described as a “warm and cozy greeting card of an album” – featured tunes include Christmas classics such as ‘The Christmas Song’, ‘Winter Wonderland’, carols such as ‘Silent Night’, and lesser-known tunes like ‘Christmas Rainbows’. The band will also present other jazz standard arrangements which Joe performed throughout his career. Expect an evening of great variety, as well as musicianship and interpretation of the highest quality.
Hugo Jennings is known both for his tasteful playing and resonant bass vocals, and his work as founder and director of the highly successful Battersea Jazz Festival, Hugo has performed with at some of the Britain’s most prestigious venues and events, ranging from jazz clubs such as Toulouse Lautrec, Hampstead Jazz Club, and Pizza Express Dean Street, to larger halls such as Battersea Power Station and the Clapham Grand, and events such as the Brighton Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe. He has also performed alongside some of the biggest names in British jazz, including Steve Fishwick, Alex Garnett, Tom Smith, and countless others. He is also the conductor of Social London Orchestra and the South London Jazz Orchestra
