ARTIST STATEMENT:
For August I will turn the gallery wall into an unapologetically queer sanctuary. Within this setting, I can embrace a maximalist aesthetic, enveloping viewers in an all-encompassing experience rather than merely presenting pictures to be observed in a linear fashion. This collection embodies a celebratory aesthetic with large-scale, unconventional, and provocatively charged imagery. It finds its inspiration in the potent emotion of queer rage, born from the relentless attempts of a system to erase and marginalize queer individuals. Through "Swallowed Hole," I aim to ignite conversations and foster an empowering space for the celebration of queer identity and resilience.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
I am a queer photo-based artist. I see photography through the knowledge of queer theory, and I use its influence to destabilize photography, speak to counter-culture publics, and investigate the aspects of photography that function as a tool of oppression. I earned my MFA in Photography from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. My work has been exhibited throughout the country including Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, California, and Florida. In addition to my art making practice, I have curated and juried a number of exhibitions related to themes of sexuality and identity. I was the recipient of a month-long residency fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, and I won first place at the William Way LGBTQ Community Center in Philadelphia. I currently serves as an Associate Professor of Photography at Bloomsburg University.
