Join us on Wednesday, April 2 at 7 p.m. in the Mackay Room for "Slavery in Bergen County."
Borough Historian and Glen Rock Historical & Preservation Society President, Kathleen Walter will be presenting an interactive event discussing how the institution of slavery was established and perpetuated in Bergen County. Throughout the dynamic visual presentation there will also be audience interactions through cell phones!
In 1800, Bergen County had the largest number of enslaved people in New Jersey, with 2,825 enslaved people. It had the highest percentage of enslaved people in New Jersey, with nearly 20% of the population enslaved between 1726 and 1820.
Skunk Hollow, Park Ridge, and Dunkerhook are three communities of freed African Americans located in Bergen County.
