ABOUT THE PLAY
As a theatre troupe prepares to rehearse The Rules of the Game (another Pirandello play), their rehearsal is interrupted by 6 strange figures- a Father, Mother, Stepdaughter, Son, and two children. These induvials claim to be “characters” who are yet unauthored and seek to have their story told on the stage. The director and actors acquiesce, putting their production on hold to hear what these phantasmic figures have to say. What follows is a series of viewpoints of each of the characters concerning their narrative. Like a shattered mirror, each member of the family reflects their truth; however, there are many contradictory and inexplicable points offered by each character. What the theatre troupe (and audience) have before them is a fractured series of events and questionable motivations that they must piece together to make sense of everything. Emerging from this framework, there are deep questions about theatre, life, and the subjective nature of truth. This culminates in a violent and dramatic ending with many comedic points along the way.
6 Characters In Search of an Author is Luigi Pirandello’s most prolific work, an absurdist metatheatric play about authors, their characters, and theatre practitioners. It premiered in 1921 and contained many of the fears and perceptions of the zeitgeist after WWI. A deeply philosophical yet highly emotional piece, it was initially met with shouts from the audience suck as “Manicomio!” (Madhouse!) and “Incommensurabile!” (Off the Scale!) due to its strange structure and lack of conventional storytelling. Thanks to a couple of revisions and published explanations by Pirandello himself, 6 Characters became one of the most important plays of the 20th century.
