About this Event
The “Our Places, Our Stories” zine-making series is a community effort to tell and preserve the stories of Black creativity, resistance, and innovation, and honour the neighbourhoods, venues, parks, and community spaces that were central to Black music-making in Montreal.
Each workshop takes us through a different era, with invited guest artists to give personal accounts. While workshop 1 started in the Golden Age of jazz, this 7th edition brings us to the early 2000s concert & party scene. Come hear first hand stories from DJ and concert promoter, Rickey D.! Under the guidance of artist Hasina Kamanzi, we will create pages for a collaborative zine inspired by these stories, using scanned flyers, photos, and posters from ARCMTL’s archive. All are welcome, no previous zine-making experience required :)

Ricardo Daley (Rickey D) of Rickey D. Events has been putting on concerts and parties in Montreal for nearly forty years. From legends such as Run DMC in the mid 1980s to countless reggae, ragga, funk, rnb and hip-hop shows since then, Rickey D. has helped keep Montreal nightlife so alive and thriving.
Hasina Kamanzi’s work explores Black cultures and identities through the fusion of science fiction, fantasy, and Afrocentric themes. She uses the visual language of Afrofuturism to reimagine the world, create new narratives, and challenge the status quo. Her art seeks to empower and inspire Black people to see themselves in new ways while disrupting oppressive systems. Through themes of technology, time, and memory as they relate to the African diaspora, she draws from her Burundian ancestry to create art that honours the past and envisions the future.
