About this Event
You’re Invited: New Works Stage Reading MEMORIAL CUTZ
Join us for a developmental staged reading of MEMORIAL CUTZ, a brand-new Afrofuturistic May play written and directed by Dr. Austin Dean Ashford as part of The American Calendar Cycle.
In a not-so-distant future, tech companies have started buying up Black barbershops, regulating the culture, and even banning personal haircuts under the guise of “safety” and “innovation.” One legacy barbershop refuses to disappear even as an AI smart chair observes, records, and tries to optimize what was never meant to be automated. Set over Memorial Day weekend, MEMORIAL CUTZ blends sharp humor, cultural commentary, and futuristic imagination to ask: What happens when community becomes a product… and tradition becomes illegal? Who gets to own the chair, the clippers, the memories and the future?
This is a full ensemble staged reading a live workshop performance where the script is still being shaped. Your presence matters: your laughter, your reactions, and your feedback help strengthen the next draft.
