"Meet the Artist" with Lydia Panas

On Thursday, November 14, we welcome Lydia Panas to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Panas will present an overview of her practice that combines photography and video. Her approach reflects a deep understanding between psychoanalysis and creativity. Diving into her unconscious, she explores notions of defiance, healing, awareness, and pleasure. Panas will discuss the conceptual threads running through her portraiture and still-life work including the chocolate, florals, and cake. She will have copies of her books The Mark of Abel and Sleeping Beautyavailable for sale and signing.

Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.

Lydia Panas is an artist working with photography and video. She is interested in women, identity, and what lies below the surface, investigating questions of who we are and what we want to become. Panas’ work has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries in the U.S. and internationally including the National Portrait Gallery (London and Edinburgh), Phillips Collection (Washington D.C.) Artist’s Space (New York) and Kunstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin). Her works are represented in public and private collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Bronx Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Palm Springs Art Museum, Allentown Art Museum, Michener Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago, among others. Her work has appeared in many periodicals including the New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Hyperallergic, and PDN. Panas has published three monographs, “The Mark of Abel (Kehrer Verlag 2012), “Falling from Grace” (Conveyor Arts 2016) and “Sleeping Beauty” (MW Editions 2021). She divides her time between a farm in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, and New York City.
