About this Event
On Thursday, April 17, we welcome Angela Cappetta to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Cappetta will present work from her new book . There will be copies of Glendalis available for sale during the event, as well as some zines. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube page at 6pm.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Angela Cappetta is a documentary-style photographer preferring deeper projects where she can hide in plain sight. She uses edgy warmth to convey a unique blend of intimate, poignant and sometimes humorous views of the human condition. Angela is from New Haven, Connecticut, one of the most economically and racially segregated cities in America. At the start of her career, Cappetta had limited funds and moved to Alphabet City, long before it was gentrified, when it was still primarily a Black and Latino community. To create a sense of stability and continuity amid her early life as a busy, working photographer, Cappetta took to the streets early mornings with her camera whenever she was home, walking around with an analog Fuji 6x9-mainly because nobody believed it was a real camera. People often mistook it for a toy. This was the disguise she implemented to create multiple, parallel bodies of work.
This style has earned Cappetta numerous grants and recognitions, including a NYFA photo fellowship, a VCCA residency and three MacDowell Fellowships. Blind Magazine called her a "wild child" and The New Yorker highlighted Angela in a feature-length interview. She has been featured in other publications such as Dazed, W, L'Oeil de la Photographie, Glamour Brasil and Huck. Preferring analog methods, Angela shoots primarily with a 6x9 and a Leica. She is known for her masterful command of flash and processes and prints much of her own work.
Her photographs are in collections worldwide including that of Agnes Gund, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Smithsonian (formerly The Corcoran Gallery of Art), The New York Public Library, the Carlsbad Museum and the Center for Photography at Woodstock.
Cappetta's first monograph is out on L'Artiere Edizione.
