Start with the 1941 Bogart classic “The Maltese Falcon” and 1944 Saturday matinee serial “Captain America”. Wrap it up with the 1981 “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and 1994’s “Forrest Gump.”
The Maltese Falcon (1941; 100 minutes)
The film noir classic based on Dashiell Hammett’s novel stars Humphrey Bogart as private detective Sam Spade, entangled in a dangerous web of crime and intrigue over a jewel-encrusted statuette. The directorial debut of John Huston co-stars Mary Astor as the femme fatale client, with Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet as unscrupulous villains. The film, notable for its cast, crisp dialogue, and dramatic cinematography, was one of the first 25 films the Library of Congress inducted into the National Film Registry as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
