Jazz improvisation is like a language. Fluent speakers have a playful command of vocabulary and a vivid auditory imagination. In this workshop, we develop the skills for jazz improvisation by gathering melodic ideas—vocabulary—and strengthening audiation: the ability to think in music and hear it from within. With a voice- and ear-centered approach, we connect sound directly to musical concepts, making jazz accessible, embodied, and expressive for musicians of all backgrounds.
We’ll acquire vocabulary by learning and singing a classic solo together, using it as a springboard for deeper insight. Listening and aural skills grow through group-based harmonic games and exercises, alongside the study of common chord progressions, interval patterns, and voice leading. We’ll also improvise together—through musical games and the exploration of standard forms—cultivating attentive listening, musical awareness, and improvisational playfulness.
