"How Possum Played Death" + Shadow Puppet Making Workshop
About this Event
An afternoon of performance and making in two acts. First, Matt McGee performs his original short piece How Possum Played Death — a handcrafted puppetry work that showcases the expressiveness, humor, and craft that defines his practice. Then, roll up your sleeves: you'll learn the fundamentals of shadow puppet making, starting with a guided template and then designing and cutting your own original puppet using the same technique. By the end of the afternoon, you'll have a finished shadow puppet you created from scratch and a much deeper appreciation for how stories are built by hand. Great for curious adults, families with older kids, and anyone who wants to make something they can actually use.

About the instructor:
Matt McGee is a puppeteer and master craftsman whose work lives at the intersection of imagination and rich storytelling. For more than two decades, he has been building characters and worlds by hand, blending traditional techniques with everyday materials to create pieces that feel both timeless and alive.
At The Monastery, his work invites you beyond observation and into immersion. This exhibition transforms the space into a living landscape of story and form, where puppets, objects, and environments blur together. It is less about viewing finished pieces and more about stepping inside the creative process itself, as if entering the mind of the artist.
McGee’s practice is rooted in the belief that storytelling is physical, that wonder can be built, and that even the simplest materials can hold something extraordinary when placed in the right hands.
