This event will bring together residents of Independent Living and Assisted Living, along with their families, to hear educational speakers discuss a variety of engaging topics. What are the different ways we learn about stars exoplanets? What can we figure out just from the light we receive? He will be giving a talk on how we measure properties of stars, and various methods of detecting exoplanets, as well as measuring their properties. He will also explain what kind of things we infer about them beyond what we can actually detect, and how we do that.
Presenter Max Kroft is a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in the UW-Madison Astronomy Department. His research primarily involves observational studies of exoplanets, planets outside of our solar system. He currently works on detecting and characterizing the orbits of new exoplanets discovered with the TESS mission. He also is involved with studies of binary star systems out of the plane of our galaxy. In the future, he would like to work on more detailed characterizations of exoplanets, such as studying their atmospheres using spectroscopic data from JWST.
