About this Event
German art historian and author Julia Voss, in conversation with curator Mia Matthias, will discuss the extraordinary life and work of artist Hilma af Klint. Hilma af Klint: A Biography (Chicago University Press, 2022) is the first biography of the Swedish pioneer of abstraction. The biography was a bestseller in Germany and shortlisted for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in 2020. The book, which explores af Klint's relationships to art, science, love, and the spiritual, has been published in German, English, Swedish, and Korean so far.
Julia Voss is an art critic, art historian, curator, and author of Hilma af Klint: A Biography. Voss first encountered af Klint's work in 2008, when she traveled to Stockholm as the visual arts editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Voss was then inspired to learn Swedish and research af Klint's life. Aside from being the former visual arts editor of FAZ, Voss has been teaching art history as an honorary professor at Leuphana University in Lüneburg since 2015.
Mia Matthias is an Assistant Curator at Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland. Previously, she has held curatorial positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
