The Eastern District Office the Eastern District School Liaison Committee and artist Prudence Mak jointly present the "Eastern District Cultural Festival – Wandering around Eastern District" on February 11-19 at Oil Street Art Space and the Eastern District Cultural Sqaure. The festival involves large-scale art installations exhibitions and a series of DIY workshops.

Prudence Mak is the founder and design director of Chocolate Rain a renowned creative brand in Hong Kong. For this event she brings Chocolate Rain’s most well-known characters to the Eastern District. Dino’s distant relatives “Dong Dong” and “Yau Yau” who respectively represent the Eastern District and Oil Street make their first public appearance. The 12 metre high giant inflatable “Dong Dong” and Fatina will be surfacing from the depths of the sea waters opposite the North Point Pier to explore Eastern District. 5 pieces of tailor-designed large-scale art installation works by Mak will be displayed at the Eastern District Cultural Square. Together they portray snapshots from the Eastern District in a nutshell. In the middle Fatina and a 8.2 metre high “Yau Yau” will be frolicking in a giant swim ring. Fatina’s friends will also be popping up in translucent bubbles with some sipping on a cup of hearty Hong Kong-style milk tea; some playing with trams; some poised with color palettes and paintbrushes ready to create their debut works; whilst others are chomping on delicacies like pineapple buns. On the other end you will find a busy Fatina with cabbages mushrooms and other adorable figurines welcoming you at Oil Street’s story village.

In addition to large-scale outdoor art installations Mak presents the “Wandering in the Clouds” exhibition a total of 20 acrylic works on canvas created specially for the “Eastern District Cultural Festival”. She integrates the Eastern District’s history and culture landmarks and the community’s warmth into her original character Fatina’s fantasies hence presenting the landscape of Eastern District in a simultaneously realistic and illusory light. Fatina frolicks around places like the State Theatre King’s Road Playground Eastern District Clothing Alteration Shop King Wah Signboard the swimming shed by the seaside in North Point and Shell Street. With Mak’s vibrant use of dreamy colors every scene in the Eastern District is full of vitality and rich in content.

At the same time "Eastern District Cultural Festival – Wandering around Eastern District" will provide 12 DIY workshops suitable for different ages. Mak will teach the public how to use recycled fabric pieces to create custom-made tiny clothing for “Dong Dong” and “Yau Yau” make simple cloth plushies and design doll attire! On the final two days of the cultural festival a storytelling area will be set up on stage and “Auntie Choi Storytelling Sessions” will be held.

Eastern District is a lively community with distinctive historical structures and a strong artistic vibe.
