"Deaf-Centered Interpreting: Who, What, When, Where, How, and Why?" CEUs: 1.0

This 10-hour, two-part, thought-provoking workshop is designed and beneficial for everyone in the community and the Interpreting industry; ASL Interpreters, Deaf Interpreters, Tactile Interpreters, ProTactile Interpreters, Interpreting Agency Heads, Interpreting students, and the Deaf community who wants to know how to collaborate with their interpreters! WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

To improve the interpreting experience for both Deaf people and interpreters alike, thinking out of the box is necessary. This presentation will force the participants to take a hard look at how interpreters often unintentionally create an environment of disengagement and disempowerment among deaf people by employing the standard practice of interpreting. Specific examples of such practice will be demonstrated. Specific ideas and strategies to improve the outcome of the interpreting experience for both deaf people and interpreters will be presented. The goal is to create DEAM (Deaf Dream Team) where both deaf people and interpreters come out winners in any interpreted situations.

Dr. Thomas "Tom" K. Holcomb's Bio:

Tom recently retired from Ohlone College in Fremont, California, after more than 30 years of teaching courses on Interpreting, Deaf Culture, and Deaf Education. Previously, he was a faculty member at San Jose State University and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Tom’s research focuses on Deaf Culture and Deaf-Centered Interpreting, with an emphasis on enhancing interpreting experiences for both Deaf individuals and interpreters. To advance this goal, he edited Deaf Eyes on Interpreting in 2018 and launched a weekly vlog series on Deaf-Centered Interpreting.

Recognized for his dynamic presentation style, Tom bridges Deaf and hearing cultures through engaging workshops and lectures. He has presented in 45 states and numerous international venues. His work includes innovative educational resources, such as the online curriculum A Sign of Respect: Strategies for Effective Deaf/Hearing Interactions, the DVD/workbook set See What I Mean: Differences Between Deaf and Hearing Cultures, a Cultural Detective training module on Deaf Culture, and several books, including Introduction to Deaf Culture and Deaf Culture, Our Way.

Tom holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Gallaudet University, a Master’s degree in Career and Human Resources Development from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Rochester.
