Comparing Apples to Apples with Lon Brauer, the ViewPoint 56, Exhibition Judge

Think of those things that you do every day…and never give a thought about how you do them. You tie your shoes. You brush your teeth, you get dressed, you drive your car, etc. You do these things automatically because they are habit. You have trained yourself to do these intuitively. Why? So you can deal with the variables as they present in the course of the day. If you had to agonize over every routine activity you would be frustrated and nothing would get accomplished.

Painting should be an approach with the same principle. We must create habits; create intuitive responses; create familiarity. Then we can confront those very specific challenges that always come up when we make paintings.

This workshop will be in-studio, so weather will not be a problem. In this two day course I will be providing you with photos of simple still lifes. Rather than painting five paintings of five different subjects we will be doing five paintings of one subject. It’s an exercise, but one that will give you a new-found tool to propel your painting experience to new heights.

The student will be exposed to the following

· The limited palette

· Mixing colors – what are the possibilities as we expand the palette

· Converting a subject into shapes

· Paint application – what can a brush do

· Cropping for better composition

· Developing strategies when starting a painting

· Color and value issues

· Paint-by-number

This workshop is suitable for experienced as well as beginner artists. It is tailored primarily for oil painting but all mediums will benefit.

Short bio

Lon Brauer is an American artist known for his work in figure and plein air landscape. Born in 1955 and coming of age in the seventies, he has roots in the abstract expressionist movement. Although a representational artist he steers clear of the overtly literal. His work is a mix of the abstract and representational bringing an expressionistic use of paint and materials to create images that challenge the viewer with new perspectives.

Lon shows his work nationally. He presents numerous workshops on painting techniques and alternative methods. He lives and works with his partner, quillwork artist Djuana Tucker, and owns Lon Brauer Studios in Granite City, Illinois.
