The Communist Party of Australia NSW State Committee is launching a new edition of Jack McPhillips’ “Communists and the Trade Unions”. Regarded as a spiritual successor to Lance Sharkey’s “The Trade Unions: Communist Theory and Practice of Trade Unionism”, McPhillips’ pamphlet builds on the lessons in that text with decades of experience in the labour movement. “Communists and the Trade Unions” is filled with a fantastic insight into how communists should work within the trade unions to build militancy against the oppressive capitalist class.
Join us on Friday, the 22nd of July, where we will host three excellent speakers who will talk about Jack McPhillips and the lessons imparted to them from McPhillips’ pamphlet.
DAVID MATTERS is currently the assistant general secretary of the Communist Party of Australia. He serves on the CPA Central Committee Executive, National Education subcommittee, and is editor of the Australian Marxist Review. Matters is also a former Queensland state secretary of the Australian Tramways and Motor Omnibus Employees Association before becoming Queensland assistant state secretary and Queensland secretary of buses and trams of the Australian Rail Tram and Bus Industry Union, retiring in 2014.
WARREN SMITH is currently deputy national secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia. He currently serves on the CPA Central Committee. Smith has worked on the waterfront since 1990, becoming assistant branch secretary of the MUA Sydney branch in 2003 before becoming branch secretary in 2007. Smith moved into a national role in 2009 as assistant national secretary before commencing the role of Deputy National Secretary 2021.
JIMMY DONOVAN is currently the national secretary of the MUA Veterans. Among a litany of other roles, Donovan served as Central NSW branch secretary. As branch secretary, Donovan was involved in the Patrick’s dispute – one of the largest industrial disputes in Australian history. Donovan is also a former CPA Central Committee member.
