In Southern California, Ronald graduates high school as the "most brilliant scholar." However, his graduation speech on "the Curse of the Athlete" causes offense among the student body, especially popular athlete Jeff, and leads to Ronald's sweetheart Mary rejecting him. In an attempt to win Mary back, Ronald follows her to Clayton, a college known for its focus on athletics. Despite his lack of skill in baseball and track and field, Ronald tries out for the teams while also working secret jobs as a soda jerk and waiter. When Ronald's grades suffer, the dean empathizes with his situation and makes him the coxswain in a rowing competition. The coach tries to sabotage Ronald, but the potion meant for him is consumed by the other coxswain. Despite causing chaos during the race, the Clayton team still emerges victorious. Meanwhile, Mary begins to appreciate Ronald's efforts, but Jeff takes her hostage on the day of the boat race. Ronald comes to her rescue, displaying unexpected athleticism and defeating Jeff. Mary agrees to marry Ronald, and they live their lives together until the end.
