Every Thursday, the brass mavericks Michael Louis Johnson and Nolan Murphy are teaming up with the good folks who brought you Civil Liberties bar at their new venue, Third Place Toronto (across the st from Civil), to bring you Brass Band Thursdays.

Since autumn of 2009, this ever-changing collective of Toronto horn players have been improvising dance party music under the leadership of trumpeter and urban folk legend, Michael Louis Johnson. Sometimes a 5-piece "cabaret act", sometimes a 15 or 20 piece explosion of good vibes; every show is a once-in-lifetime experience. Improvising lyrics and music, Rambunctious deals in the musical traditions of swing, ska, hip-hop, funk, and more. It is pure cabaret: a band of characters ripping it up with a punk band's freedom and careless spirit, fronted by the charm and wit of a veteran entertainer. “You make up a title - We make up a song” is the band's motto. They get a title from the audience, decide a key and a form, then launch into a new song, complete with lyrics, harmonies, choruses, the lot. But be clear, this is not some experimental artistic exploration, it's a party.

Earsgang

Another ensemble led by the fearless spirit of Nolan Murphy, Earsgang features some of Canada's leading recording and touring musicians. Canada’s only “live DJ” band brings the party with seamless sets of all your favorite music in a trance/EDM style, entirely improvised right before your eyes! Featuring drums, sousaphone, and an array of saxophones and the occasional electronics, Earsgang creates unique, live, sonic portraits full of familiar melodies ~ don't miss out because no two shows will EVER be the same!
