Jason Herring serves as District Attorney for the 47th Judicial District of Texas, covering Potter and Armstrong Counties. Originally appointed by Governor Greg Abbott on August 15, 2023. Jason was elected by the citizens of Potter and Armstrong Counties in 2024 to continue leading the office. He brings more than 20 years of prosecutorial experience and a proven commitment to justice and public service.
A former enlisted man in the United States Air Force, Jason is a Conservative Christian and patriot who has dedicated his career to upholding and enforcing the law with integrity and fairness. He began his career as a Texas prosecutor in the Criminal Division of the Potter County Attorney’s Office. In 2006, his predecessor Randall Sims, hired him as an assistant district attorney. In 2013, Jason was promoted to First Assistant District Attorney, in which position he served for 10 years, before his appointment by Governor Abbott as District Attorney. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Amarillo Area Bar Association, the Texas District & County Attorneys Association, and serves as a board member on the Potter/Randall Adult Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Executive Committee. Jason holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Houston and a Juris Doctor from the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. He and his wife, Darla, have been married for 22 years, and together they are proud parents of their daughter, Erica, a student at Texas Tech University Honors College.
