This September Ando Glaso is set to welcome some of the finest Roma talent from the UK and Europe for its 2nd Roma Festival. The Ando Glaso Roma Fest will take place across two iconic Glasgow venues: Drygate Brewery on the 6th of September and the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) on Sauchiehall Street on the 7th of September.Both dates promise to be a vibrant celebration of Roma talent, featuring performances by rising stars such as Slovak pop sensation Vanesa Horakova. At just 17, Horakova is already making waves in the Roma and Czech/Slovak pop scene.
On the 6th of September at Drygate Brewery, audiences will be treated to a rich tapestry of performances. Highlights include Glasgow’s own Romane Cierhenia, a remarkable family group of Polish Roma musicians and dancers, and ZOR, a dynamic young group that masterfully blends youth and tradition to create electrifying music. The evening will also feature Ruva, an energetic dance performance collaboration between KaskoSan and Ando Glaso, showcasing top Roma musicians and dancers from England and Scotland. Closing the night is Jan Bendig, who blends his Roma heritage with pop music, first gaining fame on the Czech Slovak Superstar in 2009.
The festivities continue on the 7th of September at the CCA, beginning with workshops from renowned Roma cultural experts. Participants can learn from Gypsy Jazz legend Lulo Reinhardt, Romani language experts Juice Vamosi and Maria Palmai, and prominent Roma cultural advocate Terezia Rostas, whose workshop will offer an immersive exploration of Roma heritage, from customs to costumes. Additionally, the Human Library event will provide a unique Q&A opportunity with leading Roma experts from around the UK.
Saturday evening at the CCA will be filled with music celebrating the vibrancy of Roma culture. The lineup includes the Ando Glaso Collective, featuring musicians and singers from Romania, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Performances by Lulo Reinhardt, the grandnephew of Django Reinhardt, and Yuliya Lonskaya, an award-winning musician from Belarus, will enchant audiences. TuFlamenco will also grace the stage, delivering an authentic Tablao Flamenco performance straight from the heart of Andalucia, promising a genuine and raw flamenco experience. Rootless, an innovative group blending Indian and Roma music, will keep the energy high. The night will culminate with a festival club, featuring live music and bands, ensuring that the celebration of Roma talent and culture continues into the early hours.
