“And Thereby Hangs A Tale.....” Introducing Narrative Psychology

“We are story-telling animals”, says the philosopher Alisdair MacIntyre. “We live by stories”, says the psychologist Dan MacAdams. How we convey ourselves really matters - “Life imitates art”, says writer and wit Oscar Wilde. 

Narrative approaches to human affairs and psychotherapy are hugely influential. How does a narrative-informed approach guide counsellors and psychotherapists to help clients to make sense of and re-write the story of their lives?  How can helping professionals better identify the social and other narratives that have influenced their own selves?  How might anyone “re-author” or “re-story” a life experience?

This interactive workshop introduces key concepts and themes of narrative psychology, including how narrative and psychodynamic ideas can work together. Martin uses a range of teaching and learning approaches to help build what he hopes will be a memorable day. 

Martin Weegmann is a Clinical Psychologist and Group Analyst, mostly based in the NHS. He has written several books on the psychotherapy of addiction, group analysis and the psychology of writing. His latest book is Novel Connections: Between Literature & Psychotherapy (Phoenix Books, 2024). When not writing, he enjoys art, music and yoga.  

This is an in-person only workshop suitable for qualified and training counsellors and psychotherapists. Places are limited to 15. CPD certificates will be available on request. Refreshments will be provided but please bring your own lunch. Proceeds will support the Guild’s Reduced-fee Clinic.
